Mayor Khuzwayo-Dlamini holds Successful Youth and Sport Consultative Meeting

Maphumulo Local Municipality Mayor, Her Worship Cllr Zibuyisile Khuzwayo-Dlamini alongside deputy Mayor Simphiwe Shange held a consultative meeting on Wednesday, 10 May 2023 at Sakhuxolo Hall, with representatives from the youth and sports structures in Maphumulo to discuss ways in which the Municipality can better support and encourage youth participation.

The meeting was attended by a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from Ward Youth Forums, Sports Forums and community leaders. The stakeholders were given the opportunity to share their ideas and concerns regarding the current state of youth development and sports development in Maphumulo.

The discussions centred on a variety of issues that affects the youth in Maphumulo, including skills development, employment, sports and recreational facilities. The attendees were given an opportunity to share their concerns, ideas, and suggestions on how the Municipality can address these issues.

Her worship, Mayor Khuzwayo-Dlamini emphasised the importance of youth development as well as sports in the development of young people, both physically and mentally. She noted that sports can help instil valuable life skills, such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance, and can also serve as a positive outlet for youth to channel their energy and creativity.

“One of our primary objectives as a Municipality is to create a safe and inclusive environment that allows all young people to participate in sports and recreational activities. We must promote equity and fairness in all aspects of sports, including access to facilities, equipment, and training opportunities. We must also encourage the participation of young people from diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities,” said Mayor Khuzwayo-Dlamini.

“Furthermore, we must recognise the importance of education and skills development for our young people. Education and skills development is the foundation for personal growth and development, and it is crucial that we provide our young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in life. We must also promote entrepreneurship and innovation to empower young people to create their opportunities and contribute to the growth and development of our community,” the Mayor added.

The meeting also presented the youth and sports development 2023/24 draft budget; with the participating stakeholders highlighting the need to increase financial support from the Municipality.

The consultative meeting directed by the Youth and Sports portfolio committee was a productive and positive step towards improving youth and sports development in Maphumulo.
